How Do You Choose the Right Size Wall Art?
How Do You Choose the Right Size Wall Art?
We get asked that daily at Number 25 Design and there is no set answer – it depends on several different factors and unless you’re a gallery owner or art curator, it might be somewhat confusing for you.
Firstly, you need to consider your rooms or spaces that you’re intending to place your wall art. Is it a large wall? Will there be a lot of foot traffic to or around it? Is it above furniture such as a sofa, sideboard or bed? Is it below a shelf?
My main suggestion is that if you see something and you love it, don’t dwell on it, just buy it.
Follow Your Heart!
Three of those instances was down to not having the money in my account at the time and the other one was an ex-boyfriend who said he didn’t like it.
Probably the reason why he is an ex!
And the reason I can remember those four instances? Because I still remember those pieces of art and sculpture as if it were today.
If wall art talks to you and makes your heart skip a beat, whatever the size or colour, go for it. Sometimes the key to how to choose the right size wall art doesn’t always make sense.
There are always ways to make it work. If not, Number 25 Design will make it work for you somehow!
How To Work With Large Wall Art
Wall art that is considered large (over 100cm) is instantly a focal point and draws the eye. For those reasons, you want this piece to be a ‘wow’ piece of art. Don’t hold back and go with something that gets your creative juices flowing! If you are going to be hit with this sight every time you walk into the room, it needs to be something that you love!
For large pieces of artwork, keep it simple. By that we mean don’t add other art on the same wall. You want your art to enhance the overall feel and view of your room. A large size wall art will not look good next to a large piece of furniture.
In both our Interior Design By Numbers and Interior Design Complete packages, either your existing artwork or wall art from our online store is scaled to fit so you know exactly how it will fit and look in your room. It makes how to choose the right size wall art for your home so much easier.
Too much on the wall can overpower and end up making your room feel crowded and cluttered. Instead, add to your accessories with statement rugs and sculptures. We will shortly have a newsletter special on rugs so watch your inbox!
Grouping Wall Art
But dependent on its shape and legend, you can accompany or balance it with smaller pieces of art. Just make sure that you make the layout symmetrical.
Smaller pieces of wall art – about 20cms to 40cms are best hung in pairs or groups but make sure that you have a defined space around each setting so that you enjoy each group of wall art for the reasons you set them out as a group.
Position the larger pieces more centrally, with the smaller wall art pieces surrounding them. Smaller sizes of wall art also work well above or next to furniture or with shorter walls.
On the flip side, if you have a large wall, one small piece of art won’t cut it. You may as well just leave it plain. Whilst having a huge piece of wall art in your laundry or powder room, for example, won’t work either.
Hopefully, these suggestions will help you choose the right size wall art for your home?
Framing Your Wall Art
Though shipping costs is an element, the main reason why we don’t supply framed wall art is due to your personal choice.
Block mounting is pretty straightforward but you might have a preference for a floater or tradition frame, classic wooden frame or a more modern gold or coloured.
Your existing décor also needs to be taken into consideration. A dark mahogany traditional classic frame probably won’t work in a modern, contemporary monochrome setting. And maybe an acid green block frame is the right way to inject some colour into your room.
We do offer framing with our partnership with State of the Art Framing in Titirangi but would strongly recommend that you once your wall art is delivered to you in its tube, that you take it to a recommended framer and listen to their suggestions. A good one will listen to your likes and dislikes, ask about your current or intended colour scheme and make suggestions accordingly.
